Shane Clanton Scores $5,121 SAS Victory in Robin Wynn Memorial at Cochran Motor Speedway
Share
Shane Clanton, of Zebulon, Georgia, claimed his fifteenth career Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by Showtime Properties victory on Friday night in the inaugural running of the ‘Robin Wynn Memorial’ at Cochran Motor Speedway! Inheriting the point when leader Wil Herrington retired with a broken left front upper control arm under a lap-29 caution, Shane dominated the final twelve circuits to become the seventh different SAS winner this season. Shane reached the checkered flag 5.366 seconds ahead of his nearest competition to capture the $5,121 first place prize money.
Polesitter Austin Horton, who received $250 for laying down the quickest lap overall during the qualifying session, slipped back to as far as fifth in the running order before climbing back to finish a strong runner-up behind Clanton. Jeremy Steele, who started fourth on the grid, fell back to sixth before charging back towards the front to earn the final spot on the podium. Outside polesitter Jordy Nipper paced the field for the first 21 circuits before finishing fourth, while Allen Styck improved five positions to leave the Cochran, Georgia oval with a fifth place performance.
“This car was awesome tonight,” exclaimed the winning Clanton in SAS victory lane. “The track was rough during qualifying, but it widened out enough where you could do some slide jobs. I was just biding my time there and waiting to get into lapped traffic behind (Wil) Herrington. He had a good car and drove a smart race, but we were just trying to make the right moves at the right time. Overall, a good night though.”
Shane Clanton piloted a #25 Capital racecar powered by a Clements Racing Engine with sponsorship in part from Super K Express, SCCS Solutions, Carolina Concrete Finishing, M&S Concrete, Freeman Plumbing, Winterland Farms, Elite Excavation, Panama City Cycles, Twenty Five Designs, and VP Racing Fuels.
A total of 18 competitors entered round ten of the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series season on Friday at Cochran Motor Speedway. Austin Horton, of Whitesburg, Georgia, was quick right off the trailer, as he posted the fastest time in both MRP Fantasy Racing hot laps and VP Racing Fuels qualifying. The starting grid for the 40-lap headliner was set solely through time trials with Horton earning the pole position and Jordy Nipper, who topped Group B, rolling off from the outside of the front row. A total of six caution flags slowed the pace in the A-Main with four stoppages occurring during the first four laps.
The Peach State doubleheader for the SAS tour will wrap up on Saturday, June 13 at Senoia Raceway with a $7,500 to win shootout and the 604 Late Model, Modified, Hot Shot, Hobby, and Vintage divisions will join the Super Late Models on the racing card. The pit gates will open at 3:00pm, while the grandstands will start to allow fans into the facility at 5:00pm. The Drivers Meeting is set for 5:30pm and hot laps will take to the track at 6:00pm. Racing action on the gray gumbo is scheduled to start at approximately 7:30pm.
Grandstand admission is $25.00 for adults, while kids ages 12 and under will be allowed into the stands for free. Pit admission is $35.00 for adults, $20.00 for kids 6-12, and free for children ages 5 and under. Senoia Raceway is located at 171 Brown Road in Senoia, Georgia.
