Brandon Overton Owns Friday’s Portion of Winter Freeze at Screven for $10,000 Payday

Brandon Overton, of Evans, Georgia, defended his home turf on Friday night at Screven Motor Speedway and dominated the ‘Winter Freeze XVI’ opener to claim the $10,000 first place prize money! Brandon, who earned an additional $750 for laying down the fastest lap in qualifying courtesy of SHARCO, won his heat race in preliminary action and later rolled off from the outside of the front row for the start of the 35-lap main event. The popular driver known as “Big Sexy” then grabbed the point at the drop of the green flag and held off all challenges to keep his Budweiser-sponsored #76 machine out front the entire distance.
Sixth-starting Garrett Smith finished in the runner-up spot - 2.944 seconds behind the winning Overton at the unfurling of the checkered flag. Casey Roberts was steady throughout the contest and picked off thirteen competitors to round out the podium in third. Tenth-starting Ryan Gustin advanced to finish in the fourth position, while Trent Ivey blasted past ten racecars to earn the final spot inside of the top five.
“It always feels cool to come back and win,” Overton said following Friday’s triumph. “Home sweet home, right? Back in Georgia, red dirt. I said it last week (after Needmore), we should be good at this. I honestly was worried - I knew I had the right tire on for the end of the race, but I kept seeing all the guys with the soft tires poking at me on the starts. I was like (man) I don’t know if I put the right tire on.”
Brandon Overton’s eighth career Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by Showtime Properties win came aboard a Riggs Motorsports-owned #76 Longhorn Chassis with sponsorship in part from Budweiser, Dude Wipes, Heartbeat Hot Sauce, Garnto Southern, Riggs Fiber, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Big Dog Stump and Tree Service, RW Powell Construction, Supply Chain Management, Muscle Factory, VG Performance, Bilstein Shocks, and Boswell Oil Company.
A total of 32 Super Late Models converged at the Sylvania, Georgia facility for the opening round of Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series competition. Brian Shirley topped the speed chart in MRP Fantasy Racing hot laps with his time of 15.358 seconds, while Brandon Overton went quickest in VP Racing Fuels qualifying with his lap of 14.593 seconds. The four heat races were won by John Henderson, Brian Shirley, Brandon Overton, and Dan Ebert, while Preston Luckman and Drake Troutman emerged victorious in the pair of consolation events.
Eight caution flags slowed the 35-lapper with a multi-car wreck on a lap fifteen restart ultimately resulting in a red flag situation. The initial start of the race was called back due to a jumped start before Beckham Malone slowed to draw the second yellow on lap one. Brian Shirley then suffered apparent engine woes after only four completed laps, while the fourth yellow came a lap later for Daulton Wilson who came to a stop in the middle of turns one and two. Polesitter John Henderson suffered a flat right rear tire on lap twelve before Allen Styck slowed on the fifteenth circuit. The final stoppage took second-running Ross Bailes out of winning contention, as a tangle with a lapped car on the twenty-fifth circuit dropped “The Boss” to a sixteenth place showing.
Action heats back up at Screven Motor Speedway on Saturday, February 7 in the ‘Winter Freeze’ grand finale, which boasts a hefty $25,000 winner’s check for the ground-pounding Super Late Models. The pit gates will open at 9:00am and the grandstands will start to allow fans into the venue at 11:00am. Hot laps are slated to get underway at 4:00pm. Grandstand admission will be $35.00 for adults and pit admission will be $55.00 for adults and $30.00 for kids ages 8 and under. Kids ages 12 and under will be admitted into the grandstands for FREE.
